Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) describes systems that include extraction ventilation that prevents people in the workplace from inhaling substances, which may be hazardous to their health. Examples of such systems include dust extraction systems, weld fume systems, and vehicle exhaust systems, which are required to comply with COSHH regulations, and helps you keep your LEV systems operating to their design specifications.
There are many LEV units on the market but often do not work because they are the wrong type or they have not been installed properly.
Under these COSHH Regulations you are legally obliged to ensure that your LEV works effectively by;
- Installing it properly
- Regularly check and maintain the system
- Having it ‘tested’ at least once every 14 months (depending on the application, some systems require more frequent tests)
- Using it properly
If you have a system installed, do you;
- Have a copy of the report when it was commissioned
- Train operatives for use and maintenance of the equipment
- Keep a running log of tests
